Care

Rain Barrels of Annapolis did cover the exterior of your rain barrel with a special mixture of protective ingredients however there is not any insect protection. When you purchase a barrel you will recieve instructions on how to continue to provide your barrel with a rich and protective finish  Should insect control be needed please seek advice from your nursery expert or insect specialist and they will give you the proper treatment based on the insect type.   For winterization please empty water from the barrel and keep from freezing. Repeat after a storm as necessary.

All of our whiskey and wine barrels are made to hold liquids and have done so for many years. If barrels are allowed to dry out the wood will shrink,  The hoops can loosen (this can cause leaks). You will have to rehydrate the barrel and may have to tighten up the hoops.  To tighten up the hoops tap them in toward the center of the barrel, this will squeeze the staves together and stop most leaks. Make sure you tap all hoops in. This means you will have to turn the barrel over and tap the lower hoops in as well. This is why it is important to keep the barrel from drying out. please make and effort in keeping the barrel hydrated so it contiuousely seals. A few inches of water in the barrel should suffice. When the barrels have been dry for a period of time upon taking water from the first rain fall they could seep water.  As they continue to contain water consistently they will swell enough to close the gaps.  Almost all barrels seep at first. This is the nature of wood and is normal.  Some will always have minor seepage. This is all natural and the beauty of the barrel.  Important to note is rain barrels must be kept from freezing in the winter, drain them and bring them inside if necessary.

Please make sure the barrel is always sitting up on concrete blocks. If it is left on the bare ground rotting at the bottom will occur.  The higher the barrel on blocks the more pressure you will have coming from the hose bib. The over flow will pass most normal storm events. A discharge hose should always discharge down slope away from the barrel base and house foundation.
